Overview
The indoor rowing development programme is a focus programme for Rowing South Africa to drive development and transformation in the country. The programme continues to grow each year under the leadership of the strong, fearless, and passionate Virginia Mabaso. Virginia continues to break all the boundaries with this programme and her 15years experience in rowing shows within the level of growth rowing has shown in the past few years and we can tell that she is will not stop until her goal of seeing crews from the development programme row SA water Nationals becomes a reality. She is on the hunt for our next “GOLDEN STROKE”
This will be achieved by the continued commitment to make our sport accessible to all South Africans and that will impact all facets of rowing on and off the water. Virginia has been around the country creating rowing opportunities both on indoor rowing and on the water. Rowing hosted the SA National indoor rowing championships in Rustenburg, North West for the first time and the response from the local community, municipality and provincial government was indeed great. There will be 5 new clubs established in February 2023.
Rowing Development in Gauteng
Coming closer to home, Virginia together with the Gauteng department of sports, Arts, Culture, and recreation partnered to deliver the four rowing EXPOs in Gauteng in the areas of Alexandra, Katlehong, Sharpeville and Nokuthula special school. This partnership is about to deliver 24 new rowing school in one financial year. Thank you to the Gauteng department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation for their commitment to development sport in the province and for Rowing to be selected as one of the sporting codes to focus on, comes from the progress, sustainability and impact the development programme has in communities.
SA Schools Boatrace 2022
The vision presented to Government is to have people of colour participate in our sport. As Rowing South Africa, we continue to strive toward meeting the goals by tapping into various competition levels that we could expose the development rowers to. 2022 we put a model together on how we can deliver crews from various province to boatrace, with minimal resources. Virginia together with the team of coaches went around the country running development learn to row water rowing camps for team selection. This process was a great success with the help of Wemmer Pan rowing Club and Durban rowing club that hosted us to be able to run these camps.

Rowing South Africa delivered 3 boys crew and 3 Girls crews for 2022 boatrace for the first time. Their participation was good given the fact that these crews had 8 days on the water learning to row and be ready to race. This exercise required a lot of funding support and through the funding form Government and National lotteries commission we were able to deliver these teams. Thank you to all the schools that borrows us their equipment for these teams to be able to race. All the Support from SASRU, thank you.
We look forward to 2023 rowing activities and the growth of rowing in the country.
